What each camera shows
Big Powderhorn runs three live cameras — Summit View, Base View and Double Barrel — streaming from the hill in Bessemer, Michigan. They show different things, and knowing which is which saves you a drive.
Summit View
Looks out from the top of the mountain. This is the one for visibility and wind: if the summit is socked in while the base looks fine, that is a flat-light day up high. It is also the best read on whether it is actively snowing.
Base View
Points at the base area by the Gun Barrel Lodge. Use it for the crowd and the weather you will actually step out into. An empty base at 8:30 in the morning means nothing; an empty base at 11 on a Saturday means something.
Double Barrel
Aimed down Double Barrel, one of the steeper runs on the hill. This is the only cam that shows you an actual snow surface — whether it is fresh, tracked out or scraped.
What a camera cannot tell you
Snow depth. A grey image at eight in the morning in January is usually low light and a flat exposure, not thin cover. Base depth comes from the snow report, not from a still frame.
And remember the weather here is extremely local — this is the lake-effect snow belt, and it can be snowing hard at the mountain while Ironwood twelve miles away is clear. That is exactly why the cameras are more useful than a regional forecast.

The hill has 45 runs across nine chairlifts, and lodging at the base if you would rather not drive home in the dark.
