The Hügel Haus has been here since 1972, which is longer than most of the people who stay in it. It is worth saying plainly what it is, because it is not a hotel and it is not a six-bedroom rental house.
Eight one-bedroom units
Each unit has one bedroom and sleeps four. That is the whole portfolio — eight of them, side by side, at the base of Big Powderhorn Mountain. Units 5, 6, 7 and 8 are dog friendly.
Why one bedroom is often the right answer
Most ski lodging is priced and sized for a group of ten. A couple, or a couple with two kids, ends up paying for bedrooms nobody sleeps in. A one-bedroom that sleeps four is the size the trip actually is.
And when it is not
Larger parties book two or three units side by side. Everyone gets their own kitchen and their own door, and the group is still under one roofline a short walk from the lifts. We also have adjoining suites and rooms for families who want the connection without the shared space.
The mountain
Big Powderhorn runs 45 runs and nine Riblet double chairlifts across two peaks on 253 skiable acres, on roughly 200 inches of natural lake-effect snow a season. Nine lifts for a hill this size is the reason the lines stay short.
Arrive whenever you arrive
Self check-in runs 24 hours. If you are driving up from Chicago after work and pulling in at one in the morning, that is fine. Nobody is waiting up for you and nobody needs to be.
